The North Vernon/Center Township Volunteer Fire Department protects 43.4 square miles of mostly rural and some urban property. The city/township combination boasts a population of 9,002 residents. Our department responds to three industrial park developments housing eighteen industries. In addition to our normal, first response coverage areas, we provide automatic aid for five surrounding fire jurisdictions, while maintaining mutual aid response for two additional county jurisdictions, as well as fire jurisdictions in four neighboring counties. Our combination department consists of 4 paid engineers, 1 paid chief, and 25 paid on call firefighters. The NVFD responds out of two fire houses. We run on approximately 600 calls per year. In addition to our fire response the department provides basic life support non-transport services as well as rescue and hazmat responses.
